President's Page

Dear Colleagues,

As we travel through our 55th year at PSCA, I can't help but reflect a little bit.  I'm trying to imagine no high speed internet, social networks, emails or websites to do our daily jobs as our predecessors started out with.  School counseling has certainly evolved from the days of a half century ago of dittos, mimoegraph machines, carbon paper, typewriters, and party line telephones.  What a different world!

One thing that has not changed is the dedication to service and meeting the needs of the children we serve.  The professional development offered to PSCA members has also evolved with the times.  Fifty five years ago a small group of counselors agreed to network and provide training to school counselors was a priority in the state.

That mission continues today, by always staying current with training; directly meeting the needs of all students: socially, emotionally, and intellectually.  Expanding to include college and career readiness, school climate, crisis, bully prevention, learning plans, positive behavior plans, student aligned systems, and on and on.  At our best, PSCA brings forward national leaders and current topics for Pennsylvania counselors to be at the forefront of federal initiatives and laws.  Building a strong relationship with the Pennsylvania Department of Education and other state offices, to have actively participate and collaborate on projects such as the PA Companion Guide to the National Model and having the National Standards on the SAS website, PSCA gives us a professional network.

Counselors are often the sole entities in their buildings.  We may not have a similar peer with the same legal and ethical obligations in the school house.  Networking through local, state, and national associations is crucial in maintaining current in the field and seek advice.  Membership in PSCA provides this networking, professional development, best practices and collaboration.

This updated website is another ongoing commitment to each and every member of PSCA.  Our hope is it provides an easy format for quick access to the PSCA officers, governing board members, direct links to additional resources, membership services, articles and more.  The website also embraces our new logo.  Another update for times!  Please look for an online web-store to be the next offering online.

Welcome to the new and improved website of PSCA!  Enjoy the browsing.

I hope to meet you at the 55th PSCA Annual Conference February 23-26, 2011, in Lancaster.

Navigating New Worlds,

Kathy Zboyovski, MS, NCC, LPC
