National School Counseling Week

School Counselors: Helping Students be Brilliant

National School Counseling Week 2012 will be celebrated from Feb. 6-10, 2012, to focus public attention on the unique contribution of professional school counselors within U.S. school systems.   It also highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career.  The week offers school counselors the ideal opportunity to tout the important work we do. Listed below are samples of ideas/suggestions for National School Counselor Week:

- Host a collegial circle with your colleagues and review/discuss the ASCA National Model

-  Write a proclamation suitable for signing by the district superintendent, mayor or other dignitary proclaiming Feb. 7-11, 2011, as National School Counseling Week

-  Give a certificate of appreciation to present to someone who's been especially beneficial to your school counseling program

-  Make morning announcements to help start each day of the week off with a special message from the school counselor

-  Create a press release

-  Focus on an issue (as ascertained from student needs) for the entire week

-  Advertise to parents and teachers what you do for and with students relative to the academic, social/personal, and/or career domains

-  Create a school counselor publication/brochure and mail to parents

-  Host an open house to inform and educate students, faculty, and staff about what you do

-  Focus on the middle/average students that you don’t get to meet with as often as you’d like

-  Schedule a meeting with your principal/administrative supervisor and talk about how you are connecting your work with your school's mission and vision

-  Create a display in a main area with personal items that represent the counseling department

-  Have lunch with your school counselor colleagues (either in the building or across levels/buildings)
