Standards Aligned System (SAS)

THE PENNSYLVANIA STANDARDS ALIGNED SYSTEM – COMMON CORE STANDARDS

The Pennsylvania Standards Aligned System (SAS) is a research based web resource available to anyone in Pennsylvania.   SAS is full of good practices that identify six distinct elements that educators use frequently in their daily lessons.  The six elements of student achievement are clear standards, fair assessments, curriculum framework, instruction, materials & resources, and interventions.

In the clear standards tab of SAS school counselors can vertically view the Career, Education and Work standards to see who and when the standards build on one another.  Every standard in Pennsylvania can be found in the clear standards tab of SAS.   In the download standards tab, school counselors can also download the American School Counselor Association National Standards for Students, Career Education and Work Standards, Interpersonal Skills Standards (PA Proposed), and/or the School Climate Standards (PA Proposed).

Also, in the clear standards tab is the new Common Core Standards information.   In 2013 Pennsylvania will be fully implementing the national Common Core Standards in English Language Arts & Literacy, in History/Social Studies/Science, and Technical Subjects.   If you look at this document, you will find through all grade levels Pre-K through 12, there is one common goal in these standards.   The common goal is that students need to be career and work ready.   That directly applies to every school counselor whose ultimate goal is help the students become career and work ready.

School counselors play a vital role in assisting educators, administrators, teachers, parents, and most importantly the students to meet the new common core standards.  When this occurs, School Counselors become part of the team that ensures students are college and career ready.
