In Memory: Dr. Judy Bowers

School Counseling has lost a treasured leader and friend.

Dr. Judy Bowers, co-author of the ASCA National Model and school counseling advocate exemplar, passed away peacefully on August 24 after a courageous nineteen year battle with cancer.

Judy’s impact on the school counseling profession is immeasurable and it can be said that her writings and leadership have directly and indirectly impacted millions around the world.  She was a champion for school counselors and school counseling programs and gave unselfishly of her talent and time to ensure a positive future for the profession. The ASCA National Model was an unrivaled gift to the profession, a gift that provided a framework that defined who school counselors are and what school counselors do. Judy’s passion and advocacy were felt clearly in Pennsylvania. She travelled from her home in Tucson to Pennsylvania on several occasions to present about the Model and its implementation, presenting at two PSCA summer academies and several conferences. She was also a valuable resource in the development of the Pennsylvania Companion Guide to the ASCA National Model.

Judy served seven years on the ASCA Governing Board including a year as ASCA President 2004-2005 .Her contributions were recognized at the national level in 2007 with the  Mary Gehrke Lifetime Achievement award, ASCA’s highest honor.

Judy’s beautiful smile reflected her inner joy; kindness and welcoming manner made all she encountered feel special.

She was a wonderful and caring mother and grandmother and condolences go out to her family. Condolences also to her Arizona school counseling family. School Counselors who have been impacted by her leadership and advocacy can honor her legacy by continuing the journey she began by advocating for the implementation of the Model school counseling program that she was so instrumental in crafting.
