2003 Career Development:  Ideas and Initiatives

 Ideas and initiatives generated by Pennsylvania school counselors attending the Career Education and Development Committee Workshop during the  2003 Annual PSCA Conference:

  Group Sharing and Conversation Ideas and Activities: What Works … From Your Colleagues:

 q       Develop school district’s website to contain career and guidance information

q       Develop data base for parent email addresses – communicate frequently

q       Grade 6 Career Day

q       Advisor / Advisee Program – Every teacher works with 12 – 18 students. Meets 6 times per school year

q       Technical School Summer camp Program – Grades 6,7,8 – One week, hands-on, exploratory program.

q       9th Grade Career Classes

q       K-12 Career Counselor

q       During career day activities or “college fairs” pair successful business persons with the representatives from trade / technical institutions.

q       Develop a counseling calendar.

q       Use BRIDGES software for all juniors.

q       Conduct a job shadowing program.

q       Senior Graduation Project – career based.

q       Infuse career development into the curriculum - grade level activities.

q       Breakfast Program during homeroom: Career Speakers

q       Develop a peer program – train students to conduct “business interviews.”

q       Elementary:  Sponsor a Vehicle Career Day – Invite people in the community who use vehicles on the job.  Provide supplemental classroom materials to teachers for classroom follow-up.

q       Elementary: Sponsor a Career “Hat Day.”

q       Apple Tree Lesson – Grade 4 (Thanks to Joy Grant.)  Create a poster / felt board of a tree. The “apples” are career choices.  The trunk lists levels of education (The more education the more choices.)  The roots of the tree help nurture the tree:  Family, Friends, Values, Work Ethic, etc.

q       Create and use career portfolios.

q       Workshops:  resumes, interview skills.

q       Sponsor a Job Fair – consider working with other school districts.

q       Offer “Career Panels” – Invite local business persons in “clusters.”

q       Sponsor a Trade / Technical School Fair.

q       Partner with Junior Achievement.

q       Partner with Chamber of Commerce – Local business and industry.

q       Sponsor a Financial Aid Night.

q       Sponsor a College / Career Planning Night.

q       Offer to conduct workshops / presentations for the PTA / PTO.

q       Sponsor student tours at area ATVS.

q       Host area ATVS at your school – offer student displays and hands on activities.

q       Use volunteers to staff career center.

q       Write grants or partner with local business and industry to secure career / educational materials.

q       Challenge:  To open minds regarding careers which do not require a four-year college / university degree.

q       Redefine “college” to be all inclusive of post-secondary education.

q       Insure that more career and technical schools are represented at college nights.
