Do We Have an
Opportunity For You!
School counselors have a very special opportunity to recommend books that
we often use in our guidance classes for our partners in the
Pennsylvania Family Literacy Programs. According to Barbara Van
Horn, researcher in the PA Family Literacy Evaluation project,
there have been many positive outcomes for those parents being
served with literacy needs and their young children (ages birth
through third grade) in all 67 counties in the Commonwealth.
The findings show that participation in family literacy improves
adults’ academic skill, enables children to enter school ready
to learn, contributes to children’s success in elementary school
and increases literacy-related-interactions between parents and
their children.
